What Leaders Who Delegate Well do Differently
Everything flowed through him. Every decision, every project, every little issue. It was endless.
Tom wanted to be a great great leader. He was always looking to improve.
His team relied on him. They came to him for advice. They knew he’d always have the answer.
But that was the problem.
Everything flowed through him. Every decision, every project, every little issue. It was endless.
His to-do lists spawned more to-do lists. His calendar was a mess. Switching off in the evenings was a distant memory.
And here's the kicker. He'd tried delegating. Just like the gurus said he should. But:
- Work came back half-finished.
- People still waited for his approval.
So the more he tried to delegate, the less freedom he had. And without realising it he just kept repeating in his mind, “It’s easier if I do it myself.”
Nothing was getting better.
And then one day, scrolling LinkedIn while avoiding his inbox, he read something that stopped him cold:
📌 If your team needs you for everything, you don’t have a high-performing team—you have a dependency system.
Ouch. That's me, he thought!
The Moment Everything Changed
The post led to a newsletter. The newsletter led to something called HeRO Hour.
A live session on high-performance delegation, led by a handsome executive coach he'd seen on the Internet. And this wasn't the usual fluff about changing your mindset. It was an actual system to stop being the bottleneck.
Tom hesitated. He’d seen this kind of thing before.
But he was tired. Tired of spinning his wheels. Tired of being the one everyone leaned on while his own priorities slipped. "Why is it me who is burning out?"
So, he signed up.
One hour. What did he have to lose?
From Bottleneck to Leader
In that session, Tom learned exactly what he needed to do to change his leadership style. And he had support from a wonderful group of leaders to do that.
By Monday, Tom had stopped being the team’s safety net. Because he was making changes that actually worked, simply by using better language and clearer intentions.
By Friday, they were solving problems without him. "Maybe self-managing teams are achievable!"
And for the first time in years, he left the office on time—without guilt. Wow!
What if that could be you?
Stephen
