This Phrase Makes The World Better
In my practice as a coach, this is necessary and powerful. People need to feel that they can speak freely and without judgement.
One of the most powerful and impactful concepts I have learned in the last few years comes from the Humanistic Psychologist Carl Rogers. And that phrase is:
Universal Positive Regard
It refers to the idea, which is foundational in coaching, that we should support a person – see the good in them – regardless of what they say or do.
In my practice as a coach, this is necessary and powerful. People need to feel that they can speak freely and without judgement. That way, together, we explore the deeper truths about their situation. Which means we can find more sustainable solutions.
But I try to take this further and I would like you to try that too. Next time you see someone on the news from the other side of whatever divide you find yourself on, be that politics or social issues, I want you to remember that phrase. And I want you to see the humanity and the life in them. See the vulnerable humanity within.
You don't have to agree with them. You don't have to like what they stand for. But, if you show positive regard towards them, you collapse the distance between you and another person. Which means, at best, we spread more love in the world. But, at worst, we understand on another a little better.
I think the world needs that right now, don't you?
Have a great day, Stephen
