The Three Delegation Traps That Keep Leaders Stuck

I've had some terrible managers in my time. But also some amazing ones (yaye Sam 👋🏻). One of the things that I noticed poor managers have in common is that they are terrible at delegating. Have you experienced that?

There are lots of ways that delegation can go wrong of course, but here are three things I've seen again and again. Leaders who:

  • dump tasks
  • micromanage
  • avoid delegating at all!

One of those I have been guilty of myself! I'll let you guess which one.

The task dumper is usually so overwhelmed that they just reflexively try to get things off their plate. The micromanager struggles to trust that anyone else can do things as well as they can. The avoider doesn't want to add to anyone else's workload.

But the problem behind the problem is this: poor communication.

The leader doesn't know how to communicate the work that they need to be done in a way that increases the likelihood that it gets done. This might be because they don't feel they can delegate at all, or that they have tried and failed in the past.

Step one in solving the problem, is to recognise that it exists. Once you have done that, you are ready to learn a solution.

And so, do you recognise that you might have a problem with delegation at times? That, maybe, you are not as good at it as you would like to be?

If so, all this week I am going to be sharing advice on this really important topic. And, on Friday, I'll be giving a masterclass on the subject.

If you want to attend (for free), just sign up for HeRO Academy. It could save you lots of stress and thousands of pounds.

One last piece of advice. Don't delegate the task of registering. This one is on you.

Have a lovely day, Stephen
