How To Be Lucky
I remembered this story today when I was talking to a client who is diligently marketing themselves online, through social media, but not (yet) seeing a return on their efforts.
Gary Player was a world famous golfer. He won 9 majors in a sparkling career.
One day he was practicing bunker shots by the green and he holed on. A spectator said, "You won't be able to do that again!"
Player placed another ball on the same spot and promptly holed it. To which the spectator said, "That was pure luck! You will not be able to do it again. I bet you $500 that you will not be able to repeat it!"
Player lined up a third ball and, guess what, yet again, he holed it.
Then the spectator, as he handed over the $500, asked how he did it? To which, Player gave the now legendary reply:
"The harder I practise, the luckier I get!"
I remembered this story today when I was talking to a client who is diligently marketing themselves online, through social media, but not (yet) seeing a return on their efforts. I suggested a reframe in two ways:
- The more you market yourself, the more you increase the chances of getting THE lead that you need. So, all of that work is not in vain. It is increasing the surface area of your luck.
- Focus on the inputs (practice/consistency) of your activity, not the outputs. Winning is something that happens infrequently, so if you only judge a day to be good when you win, you'll have a lot of unhappy days. And unhappy people are not magnetic.
See a day as successful if you did the things you committed to do. The things that should, with time, show results. Stack a lot of days like that, and success will find you.
I hope you found this useful.
Have a great day, Stephen
